چکیده

There is some intriguing research about whether large magnitude earthquakes are associated with ionospheric changes caused by electromagnetic signals released by the crushing of rock and their crystalline structures. If so then ionospheric changes might be a mechanism for major earthquake prediction. Prior to some recent quakes, scientists have detected electromagnetic and other disturbances in the ionosphere, the planet’s tenuous envelope of charged particles extending from about 80 to 1000 kilometres up and above “ There are definitely hints of something happening in the region of earthquakes before the earth moves”. Says Colin Price a geophysicist al Tel Aviv University Israel. . Seismo ionospheric effects cover a variety of phenomenon starting from the bottom side of the ionosphere (D-layer) to upper ionosphere up to the magnetosphere: This involves the variations of plasma parameters, electromagnetic emissions in a large frequency ranges, perturbations of ionospheric layers, anomalies recorded in the VLF transmitter signals, night airglow observations etc. There appear macroscopic changes in the ionospheric parameters above future epicenters prior to the occurrence of earthquakes. They are the variation of ion composition, electron concentration, scale height, electron temperature etc which could be measured, experimentally from ground and various experiments onboard satellites. The lithosphereatmosphereionosphere coupling is a very complicated subject involving a lot of physical effects and the interactions on all levels starting from underground up to the earth’s ionosphere. There is a natural divide in the subject reflected in the existence of two groups of scientists. One of them is involved in studies of seismo-eiectromagnetie phenomena expressed mainly in electromagnetic emissions and fields associated with seismic activity and another one dealing with ionospheric and space plasma variations observed before and after the earthquakes. The earth’s ionosphere is composed of partially ionized gases that envelop the earth and its regular behavior is interpreted in terms of solar and geomagnetic activity.

Investigation of seismic damage index due to water level changes in reservoir through nonlinear dynamic analysis under Far-Fault and Near-Fault ground motions

In this study, reservoir water level effects on nonlinear dynamic response of concrete gravity dams are investigated. For this purpose, the nonlinear behavior of the dam concrete is captured using the concrete damage plasticity (CDP) on the non associated flow rule assumption. Water in the reservoir is represented by the Lagrangian (displacement-based) fluid finite elements. The program ABAQUS ...

Investigation of Geostrophic and Ekman Surface Current Using Satellite Altimetry Observations and Surface Wind in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea

The rise of satellite altimetry is a revolution in the ocean sciences. Due to its global coverage and its high resolution, altimetry classically outperforms in situ water level measurement. Ekman and geostrophic currents are large parts of the ocean’s current, playing a vital role in global climate variations. According to the classic oceanography, Ekman and geostrophic currents can be calculat...

Multi-Observations Initial Orbit Determination based on Angle-Only Measurements

A new approach with the ability to use the multiple observations based on the least square approach has been proposed for initial orbit determination. This approach considers the Earth’s Oblateness by using the developed Lagrange coefficients. The efficiency of the proposed method has been tested in two scenarios. The first scenario is to use the simulated and the second one is to utilize the r...

Influence of Real Ground Motion Records in Performance Assessment of RC Buildings

Reinforced concrete frame buildings with Open Ground Story (OGS) are one of the most common building configurations in urban habitat. These configurations are known to be vulnerable to seismic excitations, primarily due to the sudden loss in strength in the ground story and differential stiffness distribution throughout the structure. The differential stiffness distribution is attributed primar...

Performance Based Seismic Rehabilitation of Steel Structures with Different Types of Shear Walls

Seismic rehabilitation provides existing buildings with more resistance to seismic activity, ground motion, or geotechnical failure due to earthquakes. Performance-based rehabilitation is a general concept through which the retrofitting criteria are defined regarding to performance objectives when the structural and nonstructural members are subject to different levels of earthquake hazards. In...
